Bingo Sheet Formats: What Goes in Every Square

A bingo sheet is the printed grid a player marks during a game, and the format you choose decides three things at once: how long the game runs, how many people can play without duplicate winners, and whether the sheet survives a dauber. Get the grid right and everything else — calling, verifying, printing — falls into place. Get it wrong and you find out at the party, when four people shout at the same moment.

I have printed a lot of these. Church fundraisers, second-grade math practice, a baby shower where the "squares" were photos of the parents as toddlers. The failures were never about theme. They were about grid size, item pools, and paper weight. This guide covers all three, format by format.

The Three Things People Mean by "Bingo Sheet"

The phrase gets used for three different documents, and mixing them up causes real problems on game day.

If someone asks you to "print the bingo sheets," ask which one they mean. You need all three, and only one of them goes to players.

The Grid Sizes, Side by Side

75-Ball, 5x5: The One Most People Picture

The 5x5 bingo sheet has 25 squares, a free space dead center, and five lettered columns. Each column draws from a fixed range:

That column rule is the whole reason the letters exist. When the caller says "I-22," a player only scans one column of five squares instead of hunting across all 24. It roughly quintuples reading speed, which is why you should always print the B-I-N-G-O header band even on a homemade sheet.

Two numbers worth knowing. There are 552,446,474,061,128,648,601,600,000 distinct 75-ball sheets — about 5.5 × 10²⁶ — so duplicate cards essentially never happen by accident with a decent generator. And two randomly built 75-ball sheets share, on average, 7.68 numbers out of 24. That overlap is what keeps games competitive without making everyone win together.

90-Ball, 9x3: The Ticket

A 90-ball ticket is not a square at all. It is a grid of nine columns by three rows — 27 spaces, but only 15 hold numbers. Each row has exactly five numbers and four blanks, and the blanks are part of the design, not a mistake.

Column ranges run 1–9, 10–19, 20–29, and so on up to 70–79, with the last column taking 80–90. That is 9 + (7 × 10) + 11 = 90 numbers exactly. Each column holds one, two, or three numbers on a given ticket.

Tickets are usually sold in strips of six, and a proper strip contains all 90 numbers exactly once across its six tickets. That means if you hold a full strip, every single call marks something. It also means three prizes are standard: first line, two lines, then full house.

4x4 and 3x3: The Practical Sizes

For anything homemade, these two are the workhorses.

A caution on 3x3 line games: they end almost immediately. With 25 players holding 3x3 sheets drawn from a 20-item pool, a simulation of 6,000 games put the first three-in-a-row at call 4.5 on average — before most of the room has found the rhythm. For a 3x3 sheet, run blackout instead. Same setup, blackout first fell at call 15.3 on average, which is a real game.

What Belongs in Each Square

Squares hold one of four things, and each has its own rule.

Numbers. Straightforward, but respect the column ranges above if you are using the B-I-N-G-O header. A "5" sitting under the O column will confuse every experienced player in the room.

Words. Keep each entry to one to three words and make them audibly distinct. "Pumpkin" and "pumpkin pie" on the same sheet is a guaranteed dispute across a noisy room. Print at 14–18 pt so two-line wraps still fit the square.

Emoji or icons. Excellent for pre-readers. Limit the pool to visually distinct symbols — a dozen different smiley faces is unplayable.

Photos. Wonderful for showers and retirement parties, brutal on ink. Print photo sheets in grayscale at draft quality unless the picture is the prize, and never smaller than about 1 inch square.

Sizing the Item Pool

This is the single most common mistake on a custom card, and it is pure arithmetic. Your pool of items must be at least twice the number of squares, and three times is better.

Here is why. If two sheets are drawn from the same pool, the average number of items they share equals the pool size times the square of (squares ÷ pool). Work that through:

A 24-square sheet built from a 30-word list is 80% the same as everyone else's. The whole room wins within a call or two of each other, and it feels rigged. Write 50 words for a 5x5, 35 for a 4x4, 20 for a 3x3, and the game breathes.

The Free Space

Standard on 5x5, absent from 90-ball tickets, optional elsewhere. It is not decorative — it materially changes the odds. The probability that one specific five-number row is complete within the first 30 calls of a 75-ball game is 0.83%. For the middle row, which needs only four numbers because of the free center, it is 2.25% — 2.7 times more likely. If you drop the free space to make things "fair," you have not made it fairer, you have just made it slower.

Player Sheets vs the Master Call Sheet

Your call sheet is the document that ends arguments. It is not optional.

A good master call sheet has every item in the pool listed in a fixed order — numeric for number games, alphabetical for word games — with a box beside each one. As you draw, you cross off. When somebody shouts, you take their sheet, read the marked squares in the winning pattern out loud, and check each against the crossed-off list in front of the room.

Three rules make it work:

  1. One copy only, and the caller holds it. A second copy floating around the room is how games get gamed.
  2. Cross off, never erase. You need the full history, not the current state.
  3. Keep the order fixed. If you cross off in draw order instead of numeric order, verification takes four times as long and you will miss one.

Printing is where good sheets go wrong, and every problem has a boring fix.

The dauber problem is real. Standard 20 lb copy paper bleeds through in about a second, which ruins the sheet underneath and marks the table. If you are handing out ink daubers, use 24 lb minimum. If you are handing out crayons, chips, or dry-erase markers, 20 lb is fine.

Layout Numbers That Work

The Scaling Trap

Set your print dialog to Actual Size or 100%, not "Fit to printable area." Fit-to-page silently shrinks the grid by 3–6% to clear the printer's unprintable margin. On a single sheet nobody notices. On a set printed across two different printers, half your cards come out a different size, and cut lines stop matching.

Cutting and Laminating

Score and cut with a paper trimmer, not scissors, and feed no more than about ten sheets at a time through a guillotine or the bottom of the stack drifts. For reusable class sets, laminate 110 lb cardstock in 3 mil pouches and hand out dry-erase markers. Ghosting after a few weeks comes off with a cotton pad and rubbing alcohol.

Six Mistakes Worth Avoiding

  1. Pool too small. Covered above. It is the number one cause of five simultaneous winners.
  2. No master call sheet. You cannot verify a win from memory, and you will be asked to.
  3. Printing at fit-to-page. Mismatched grids across a batch.
  4. Words that sound alike. Read your item list aloud before printing it.
  5. Announcing the pattern after the game starts. Say "straight line, free space counts" before the first call, then say it again.
  6. Duplicate items within one sheet. If a word appears twice on the same card, one call marks two squares and the odds break. Any decent generator prevents this; hand-built sheets in a spreadsheet do not.

FAQ

What is the difference between a bingo sheet and a bingo card? In everyday use, nothing — both mean the grid a player marks. In bingo halls, "sheet" often means a single page carrying several cards to be played at once (a 3-up or 6-up sheet), while "card" means one grid. When ordering or printing, say how many grids per page to avoid confusion.

How many squares should a player card have? Nine for young children and short games, sixteen for classrooms and most parties, twenty-five for traditional adult bingo. Match the pool to the grid: at least twice as many items as squares, ideally three times.

How many numbers are on a 90-ball bingo ticket? Fifteen, arranged across a 9x3 grid with four blanks in every row. A standard strip of six tickets contains all 90 numbers exactly once, so every call marks a square somewhere on the strip.

Can I make bingo cards in a spreadsheet? You can, but watch two things: duplicate items on a single sheet, and sheets that are accidentally identical.
